Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the nerves that carry signals between your brain and spinal cord and the rest of your body — most commonly the ones running down into your feet and hands. Because those nerves handle both sensation and movement signals, damage shows up as a strange mix of symptoms that can be hard to describe to someone who hasn't felt it.
What it actually feels like
Patients describe it differently depending on which nerve fibers are affected. The most common complaints I hear are burning that's worse at night, tingling or "pins and needles," numbness that makes it hard to feel the ground under your feet, and sharp, electric-shock-like pain that comes out of nowhere. Some people also notice increased sensitivity — even bedsheets touching their feet can be uncomfortable. None of these are "normal aging." They're signals that nerve tissue is under stress.
Why it happens
There isn't one single cause. Diabetes and prediabetes are the most common drivers we see, because elevated blood sugar directly damages small nerve fibers over time. But we also regularly find cases rooted in poor circulation, chronic inflammation, past chemotherapy, alcohol use, autoimmune conditions, and nutrient deficiencies. In a meaningful number of cases, more than one of these is happening at once — which is exactly why a real evaluation matters more than a quick guess.
Why "just manage the pain" isn't enough
